After basic training in Bombay, he obtained lengthy training in HPB surgery, liver and renal transplantation
at the University Hospital Vienna, Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham and the Birmingham Children’s

He has experience of almost
25 years at the leading Liver and HPB Unit in Europe, a centre that has performed almost 5000 liver
transplants, 2500 liver resections and 1400 pancreatic resections in adults and children.
His main areas of interest in liver transplantation include transplantation in complex circumstances, the
use of extended criteria donors, surgical innovation (liver splitting, segmental grafts, live donor liver
transplantation), use of machine perfusion in preservation of donor livers and paediatric transplantation
(liver, intestine, multivisceral).
In the field of HPB surgery his interest lies in major liver and pancreatic resectional surgery for primary and
secondary cancer, surgery for portal hypertension including shunt surgery in both adults and children, post
cholecystectomy bile duct injuries and strictures, and paediatric liver and pancreatic resections.
His return to Mumbai, the city of his childhood, after 25 years is driven by the opportunity to develop a
world class HPB and Transplant facility for both adults and children with liver and pancreatic disease.
